Take Time to Plan

It can be very difficult for coaches to take time out for themselves.  Even more difficult is finding the time for career planning.  I would encourage you to think about “scheduling a time” to plan your next move(s).  Summer can be a wonderful time for coaches to do this (I can hear everyone now, “What?!?! I am coaching 10 camps this summer!!!).

But yes, summer inherently calls upon us to relax and take a vacation, even a mini-vacation.  I encourage you today to plan a “time-out” for yourself to plan for the future.

When you do find the time to reflect on the past year and connect with your goals for the future, here are some questions to get you started:

  • On a scale of 1 to 10, how would I rate the following (related to my team) and why?: last season’s success; team chemistry; team personnel, i.e. all positions filled appropriately; budget moving forward, fundraising plan, coaching staff, etc.

  • What 3 goals do I have for my team in the coming season?
  • Where do I see myself in 10 years?
  • Where do I see myself in 5 years?
  • Where do I see myself next year?
  • How will this next year help me get to my goal in 5 years and 10 years?
  • What professional development will I do this year?
  • What are my strengths and how will I make these evident to those I work with?
  • What are my weaknesses and how will I address them this year?
  • Your additional questions here… :)
Taking time out to plan can be so difficult given the many tasks coaches have on their plate, but the importance of this planning should be paramount.  So, I commit to do this today and I hope each of you will join with me!
